The numbers
How much is it costing?
Well, we don’t know how much it will cost yet, but I thought it would be fun to share the information! This will flesh out as we go along our journey, as we make decisions on building materials and finishings. We’ve got a tentative ceiling of around £350k including EVERYTHING but our aim is to get it cheaper while still getting what we want. We’ll see…
So far, we’ve spent or committed to spend…
£90,000 purchasing the plot and building £20,000 on the design and planning £20,000 to demolish the auditorium
An update
So, this was a long time ago, but I found some costings and project management documents that show the total cost was around £450,000 all in, so about £100,000 over what I thought it would be. The extra costs weren’t any one big ticket item, but just additions that added up, with some bits costing more than estimated.
We did have a hiccup where my original builder’s mortgage didn’t come through. The original lenders decided not to lend me the money they’d agreed because the house has a flat roof, even though they knew this and had the plans since the beginning. It took a couple of months for us to find a new lender and get the money through, which cost us sleepless nights, but we were honest with all our suppliers and subcontractors, and thankfully they trusted me, and I came through. This doesn’t mean we didn’t suffer though! Thanks to everyone who put their trust in me, especially Rich, Ian and Spinks…
Now, we have a house worth around, well, whatever someone would be willing to pay for it, but we’re not selling. The last official valuation was £850,000 but I wouldn’t sell it for that, and people have said it’s worth at least £1m. Whatever, I don’t really care. It’s worth way more than that to us.
