Doncaster Design Review Panel
Tuesday 10th May 2011 Kensington Cinema Conversion, Thorne Pre-Application
The Panel received a presentation from Senior Design and Conservation Officer Peter Lamb on the proposal to convert and develop the site of a former cinema in the centre of Thorne.
The Panel were advised that the cinema though not listed formed an important part of the conservation area and was of local significance.
Presented to the Panel were a number of slides showing the context of the building, the condition of the façade now and in the past, then plans submitted as part of the pre-application showing the proposed conversion to a single dwelling, 3d visuals and an animated fly through of the completed building in its context.
Overall the Panel were very positive of the building in both quality of design and the fact that re-use of the building was taking place.
They thought that this kind of reinvigoration was what was needed in Thorne.
The Panel were particularly keen on the use of old and new and the retention and addition of the slots to the old projection room.
The Panel were clearly supportive of the design and hoped the quality would remain as the design develops.
