Chapter 5: Raising the house · 8 March 2012

We're out of the ground!

Structure

Yesterday was pretty exciting for me and Kate. I think we finally felt like we were actually building a house rather than knocking one down!

All the rebar for the footings and ground floor slab were complete, along with a few drainpipes (all our drainpipes will be internal, and the cavities double up for throwing cables around the house as well.), so all this hard work gets covered up with concrete to form the lower level of the ground floor. This forms the floor for the lounge, dining room, kitchen, pantry and playroom/snug/panatropium.

Grand Designs were there to film it, so it felt extra special, and the kids got to be on camera for the first time in the park and the side of the canal.

The slab will eventually be covered up with underfloor heating, then screed / aggregate that will be polished to form our final floor.

Next up is the higher level of our ground floor, which will be put together more quickly as there are no footings, and it uses mesh rebar (which is already made up). Then the ground floor columns and walls.

We’re going up!!!
